Why Chinese Tech Brands Must Rethink Influencer Marketing in Nigeria
Chinese tech brands entering Nigeria often rely on influencer strategies that worked in China. But high follower counts and polished sponsored posts do not always translate into sales. Nigerian buyers tend to trust creators who understand the products, test them properly and speak naturally to local concerns. For phones and gadgets, a specialised reviewer with a smaller but engaged audience can be more persuasive than a celebrity with millions of followers. YouTube supports detailed reviews, Instagram improves visibility, TikTok drives discovery among younger users, while X helps fuel launch-day conversations among tech enthusiasts. Brands should look beyond views and likes by tracking conversions through discount codes, affiliate links and other measurable tools. A mix of larger creators for awareness and niche reviewers for credibility can produce better results than placing an entire budget behind one popular influencer. Most importantly, campaigns must reflect Nigerian realities. Local language, humour, purchasing power and concerns about quality all shape buying decisions. Chinese brands that give Nigerian creators room to communicate honestly are more likely to build lasting trust.
