Atiku Questions N70,000 Transport Allowance: What About Informal Workers?
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government’s proposed N70,000 monthly transport allowance for public service workers, saying it will not resolve Nigeria’s wider cost-of-living crisis. He said the six-month payment, due to begin in November 2026 under an agreement with the Nigeria Labour Congress, would offer only temporary relief. Atiku noted that rising fuel, food, rent, energy and business costs affect far more than transport. Atiku questioned why private-sector workers, traders, transport operators, small-business owners and millions in the informal economy were excluded. He called for clarity on eligibility, payment dates and outstanding minimum-wage negotiations. The Trade Union Congress has also rejected the allowance, arguing that workers need higher salaries rather than temporary payments.
