Abia Disability Commission Pledges More Jobs and Support for Deaf Women
The Abia State Disability Rights Commission has pledged continued support for Deaf women through employment, education, livelihood programmes and wider inclusion in government interventions. The commission’s chairman, Dr. David Anyaele, made the commitment during a visit by the South East Deaf Women Association and Abia Deaf Elders in Umuahia. He said qualified persons with disabilities would continue to be considered for available state government jobs. He also said the state’s secondary school for Deaf students would be upgraded, including plans for male and female hostels. The commission is also seeking qualified sign-language interpreters to improve access to its services. The association called for more opportunities for Deaf women in agriculture and small businesses, and appealed for support in resolving internal disagreements within the Deaf community.
