Group Backs EFCC’s Osun Account Freeze, Says Timing Should Not Override Anti-Graft Probe

The Centre for Public Accountability, Rule of Law and Transparency Initiative has backed the EFCC’s restriction on an Osun State Government account and criticised the presidential directive asking the commission to lift the order. The group argued that the EFCC should be allowed to act on suspected financial crimes regardless of the political calendar. It said the restriction followed preliminary findings that large sums were withdrawn from Osun State accounts between 3 and 4 August 2026, with funds reportedly transferred to private companies. Citing the Money Laundering Act and Court of Appeal decisions, the group maintained that the EFCC may place a 72-hour stop order on accounts suspected to be linked to unlawful activity. It added that a court order is required to extend the restriction beyond that period. The group urged politicians, parties and the public not to politicise anti-corruption investigations, insisting that public funds must be protected while the investigation continues.
