Buratai Says $1bn Defence Procurement Fund Never Passed Through Him
Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), says the $1 billion approved for defence procurement during his tenure was handled by the Ministry of Defence, not by him or the armed forces’ accounts. Speaking at a defence correspondents’ conference in Abuja, Buratai described claims that the money was diverted as political and malicious. He said the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force did not receive any part of the fund or issue procurement directives for it. He urged the Ministry of Defence to explain how the funds were disbursed and contracts awarded. Buratai also proposed a defence procurement transparency portal and quarterly public accountability updates on military disciplinary cases, subject to national security limits.
