Minimum Wage vs Cement Prices: Nigerians Can Now Buy Only 4 Bags Instead of 12

A simple comparison of cement prices shows how much minimum-wage purchasing power has fallen. In 2014, the ₦18,000 minimum wage could buy about 12 bags of cement at ₦1,450 per bag. By 2023, ₦30,000 could buy roughly eight bags at ₦3,500 each. In 2026, a ₦70,000 minimum wage buys only about four bags at ₦15,000 per bag. This means a worker would now need about three months of minimum-wage income to buy the 12 bags that one month’s pay could buy in 2014. The wage has increased on paper, but its real value has dropped by more than 60%. I am concerned that some people still defend the Tinubu administration and the APC despite the rising cost of living. When ordinary Nigerians struggle to build, feed their families, and survive on their salaries, we should demand real results rather than propaganda.
