FG Panel Says 33 Miners Died From Suffocation in NSCDC Custody
A Federal Government panel investigating the deaths of 33 suspected illegal miners in NSCDC custody in Niger State says asphyxiation, or suffocation from lack of oxygen, caused the deaths. The panel presented its report to the Minister of Interior in Abuja after visiting the detention facility in Minna, inspecting the mining site and conducting autopsies. It also took statements from survivors, bereaved families, NSCDC officers and other witnesses. The investigation was ordered after the deaths, which the NSCDC initially suggested could be linked to a diphtheria outbreak. The panel was tasked with identifying the victims, reviewing the conditions of their detention and determining whether any officers were responsible for negligence or misconduct.
