Iran Vows ‘Total Destruction’ of $30B AI Data Center in Abu Dhabi
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has released a video threatening to “totally destroy” a new $30 billion OpenAI-backed data centre in Abu Dhabi. The facility, known as the Stargate UAE project, spans nearly 20 square kilometres and is part of a $500 billion global AI infrastructure initiative involving major tech partners. In the video, IRGC spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaqari warned that any attack on Iran’s power grid will prompt retaliatory strikes against U.S. and Israeli interests, explicitly marking the UAE data centre as a target. Experts now say the UAE may need to deploy dedicated air defences around the site to protect its servers. Iran has already claimed responsibility for recent strikes on Gulf data centres run by Amazon Web Services and Oracle, which disrupted services across the region. This latest threat highlights escalating tensions between Tehran and global tech firms operating in the Middle East.
