Northern Youth Group Urges Faith Leaders to Put Nigerians Before Political Interests
The Northern Youth Consultative Council of Nigeria has urged religious and traditional leaders to put citizens’ welfare and national stability above political access, personal gain and silence. In a statement issued in Kaduna, the council’s president, Abdullahi Bilal Waziri, praised Cardinal John Onaiyekan for speaking about Nigerians’ economic hardship, rising prices and insecurity during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria. The group called on Muslim and Christian clerics, as well as traditional rulers, to show similar courage by speaking honestly about the country’s challenges. It criticised presidential aides for attacking the Cardinal’s remarks instead of addressing the concerns he raised.
