Abacha Family, Developer Urged to Resume Arbitration Over Lagos Property Dispute
An institutional reforms advocate has urged members of the Abacha family and their joint-venture developer to return to arbitration over a property dispute on Victoria Island, Lagos. The advocate said the 2021 agreement was affected by unpaid land charges, difficulties removing tenants and disputes over documentation. He alleged that the developer cleared outstanding liabilities, paid a ₦100 million premium and later invested more than ₦17 billion in the project. He also alleged that the landowners attempted to market the property after construction had started and obstructed registration of a power of attorney. The claims have not been independently established in the court proceedings. While the matter remains before a court, he called for the ex parte order appointing a receiver/manager to be reviewed and for both sides to protect the development through arbitration.
