Eight Killed as Charter Plane Crashes Near Remote US Air Force Radar Site in Alaska
All eight people aboard a civilian-contracted charter aircraft died after it crashed near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site in western Alaska on Thursday, August 20. The aircraft had departed Anchorage with two pilots and six passengers. It was believed to have gone down while approaching the remote radar-site airport, about 725 kilometres west of Anchorage. US military authorities said the radar station is part of a network that monitors aircraft operating in Alaska's airspace and near its borders. Investigators have not disclosed the cause of the crash or the duties of those on board.
