Spain’s Transport Minister Resigns After Deadly Train Crashes
Spain’s Transport Minister, Oscar Puente, has announced his resignation following two major train crashes in less than a year. The latest collision, near Urda on October 28, killed 69 people and injured more than 200. Puente said he decided to step down soon after the crash but stayed on to manage its aftermath and introduce safety measures. The collision happened when a Renfe high-speed train struck the rear of a stationary Iryo train on the Madrid–Andalusia line. Authorities have pointed to human and computer failures, while rail union representatives say the investigation should also examine wider safety-system failures. Puente described his decision as a matter of political dignity and empathy. He did not specify when he would formally leave office and said he would not seek a seat in Spain’s November 29 general election.
