Nigeria Launches Oil and Gas Security SOP to Tackle Theft and Pipeline Vandalism
Nigeria has launched a Standard Operating Procedure for security agencies, regulators, operators and contractors working to protect oil and gas infrastructure. The framework is designed to improve coordination against crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, illegal refining and related environmental damage. Officials said the architecture will clarify the roles of participating institutions, strengthen intelligence sharing and ensure contractors operate under government security supervision. It also sets procedures for patrols, drone use, arrests, evidence handling and the recovery of stolen petroleum products. NNPC said collaboration has helped raise crude oil and condensate production from about 950,000 barrels per day in August 2022 to above 1.7 million barrels per day. The framework also requires lawful treatment of suspects, better reporting, community engagement and monitoring of prosecution outcomes, infrastructure reliability and environmental compliance.
