Senate Explains Why FCT Is Excluded From Proposed State Police
The Senate says the Federal Capital Territory will not be included in the proposed state police arrangement because it has no governor or State House of Assembly. Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu said the FCT is administered directly by the Federal Government through the FCT minister and the Federal Executive Council. Unlike the 36 states, its laws are made by the National Assembly. The clarification comes as the Federal Government prepares a national policing bill to support state police. Under the proposed framework, states would establish, fund and oversee their police forces, while federal grants could be provided with National Police Council and National Assembly approval. The FCT is expected to remain under federal policing because of its distinct constitutional status.
