Tinubu Sends Bill to Senate on Returning Convicted Nigerians to Serve Terms at Home
President Bola Tinubu has sent a bill to the Senate that would allow Nigeria to make prisoner-transfer agreements with other countries. The proposal would enable convicted Nigerians abroad to serve their sentences in Nigeria where a bilateral agreement exists. The bill seeks to amend the Transfer of Convicted Offenders Enactment and Enforcement Act of 2004. It would also allow Nigeria to receive foreign nationals convicted in Nigeria when reciprocal agreements apply. Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s letter during Tuesday’s plenary and referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business. Transfers would not be automatic, as each case would depend on the terms of the relevant agreement between Nigeria and the other country.
