DHQ: U.S. Troop Drawdown Will Not Disrupt Nigeria’s Security Partnership

The Defence Headquarters says the planned withdrawal of more than 200 United States personnel from Nigeria will not weaken security cooperation between both countries. At a security briefing in Abuja, Defence spokesman Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba said the drawdown was linked to specific operational and counter-terrorism objectives. He said intelligence sharing, training, technical support and other military cooperation would continue. Uba stressed that Nigerian security forces remain primarily responsible for defending the country. He added that the Armed Forces are focused on defeating terrorists and other armed groups while supporting broader, state-led non-kinetic efforts that address insecurity’s root causes. He urged Nigerians not to view adjustments in foreign troop deployments as proof that Nigeria’s defence capability or its partnership with the U.S. has collapsed.
