South-South Igbo Voices Defend Closer Unity With the South East

South-South Igbo Voices Defend Closer Unity With the South East

I reject the claim that Ndigbo in the South East are “unity beggars.” From my perspective, many Igbo people in the South-South are actively seeking closer unity with their brothers and sisters in the South East. We see this unity as a way to strengthen our shared identity, increase our collective numbers and resources, and advocate for greater inclusion in regional development. Some of us also support expanding the South East from five to six states and accessing the benefits of the South East Development Commission. I believe this aspiration is voluntary and should not be portrayed as land grabbing or an imposition. We are proud to identify with the wider Igbo nation and to pursue unity across the region.
