Presidency Says Tinubu FOIA Case Is a Civil Records Dispute, Not a Criminal Trial

The Presidency says the ongoing case in a Washington, D.C. court concerns requests for United States government records under the Freedom of Information Act, not criminal charges against President Bola Tinubu. It said the court has allowed some agencies to withhold or redact records under legal exemptions covering issues such as grand-jury material, legal privilege, personal privacy, confidential sources and investigative methods. The FBI and DEA have released 399 pages with redactions. The remaining dispute is whether the redactions are lawful. The plaintiff may file further responses by September 11, 2026, while the FBI, DEA and President Tinubu's legal team are due to respond by September 18, 2026.
