Skepta Backs Multiculturalism and Challenges UK Rap to Raise Its Standards
Skepta says his new album, *The Fork and Knife*, is a statement in support of multiculturalism and a challenge to raise standards in UK rap. He discussed the album with BBC Newsbeat after its release on Friday. The grime star, born Joseph Olaitan Adenuga Jr in Tottenham to Nigerian immigrant parents, said the project explores life between cultures and took six years to make. He described grime as a product of immigration and said he wanted to show what can happen when an immigrant child is given a chance. Skepta also welcomed BBC Radio 1Xtra’s new UK rap chart, saying it could help emerging artists and producers gain recognition. He said he hopes to make rap sophisticated again.
