Togo Cites Security Concerns as French Documentary Filmmakers Remain Detained

Togo’s government says it has “serious and corroborative” evidence against two French documentary filmmakers and their Togolese fixer, who have been detained since July 27. The authorities accuse the team of making false declarations and using a drone in areas considered sensitive because of jihadist threats. They also say the filming permit was signed only by the Togolese colleague and was limited to specified locations. The filmmakers and their colleague deny the allegations. Press freedom group Reporters Without Borders has called for their release, raising concern over one filmmaker’s health and the need for urgent medical treatment. Their production company says the team obtained the required permits and declared its equipment to customs.
