How Yugoslavia Broke Apart Into Six Countries and Kosovo
Yugoslavia was a socialist federation in southeastern Europe from the end of World War II until its dissolution in the 1990s. It included Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia, now called North Macedonia. Under Josip Broz Tito, Yugoslavia remained outside the Soviet bloc and played a leading role in the Non-Aligned Movement. After Tito died in 1980, economic problems, nationalism and political tensions deepened across the federation. Slovenia and Croatia declared independence in 1991, followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992. Macedonia left peacefully in 1991, while Montenegro became independent from Serbia in 2006. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but its status remains disputed because Serbia and several other countries do not recognise it.
