Serbia’s Student-Led Movement Sends Dozens of Academics to Parliament
A student-led opposition movement has won 141 seats in Serbia’s 250-member National Assembly, bringing dozens of academics and professionals into parliament. The new lawmakers include an astrophysicist, engineers, chemists, medical researchers, economists, teachers, lawyers, artists and farmers. More than half reportedly hold doctoral or medical degrees. The movement grew out of nationwide protests after the collapse of a train-station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024, which killed 16 people. Protesters blamed public-sector corruption and demanded accountability. The group now faces the task of forming a government after 13 years of rule under President Aleksandar Vučić. It has pledged to tackle corruption, strengthen accountability and promote merit-based governance.
