UN Marks 15 Years Since Abuja Bombing That Killed 23 People

The United Nations has commemorated the victims of the 26 August 2011 bombing of its Abuja headquarters, which killed 23 people, including 11 UN staff members, and injured several others. UN Secretary-General António Guterres paid tribute to those who died, their families and survivors. He said the organisation would continue to honour their memory through its work. Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, which damaged the UN House and heightened security concerns around diplomatic and international facilities in Nigeria. The building was renovated and reopened in 2019, while court proceedings involving suspects linked to the attack are still ongoing.
