Man Jailed for Life After Conviction for Assaulting Six-Month-Old Baby in Lagos
Justice Rahman Oshodi of Ikeja Special Offences Court has convicted Victor Dickson for sexually assaulting his neighbour’s six-month-old baby. The judge found that the prosecution proved penetration beyond reasonable doubt based on compelling circumstantial evidence and discrepancies in Dickson’s statements. The toddler’s mother testified that Dickson took her naked child behind a closed door and inserted his finger into the baby’s vagina. In court, Dickson’s testimony contradicted his earlier police statement and showed no remorse as he accused the mother of fabricating the allegations. Describing the act as animalistic, Oshodi sentenced Dickson to life imprisonment in a maximum-security facility. The court also ordered his registration as a sex offender under the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Law, 2021. Dickson had pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned in June 2022. The offence was said to have occurred on October 17, 2021, at Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. Three witnesses, including the child’s parents and an investigating officer, testified during the trial.
