Alake Orders Probe Into Deaths of 37 Detained Suspected Illegal Miners in Niger
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has sent a team to Niger State to investigate the deaths of 37 detained suspected illegal miners at a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps facility. The suspects were arrested during operations in Wushishi and Lukoto Village on September 15 and 16. NSCDC said scores of detainees were found dead early Thursday after a suspected disease outbreak. Alake called the deaths tragic and said the federal team would work with other investigators to establish the facts. Niger State Governor Umar Bago said the state, DSS, police and NSCDC had also set up separate investigative committees.
