A Public Official Bought My Compound and Raised Our Rent From ₦250,000 to ₦550,000

The compound where I live was recently bought by someone currently serving in government. It is a large property reportedly worth over ₦300 million. I strongly suspect that most of the money used to buy it came from public funds that should have benefited ordinary Nigerians. What makes the situation more painful is that the new owner has now increased our rent sharply. I used to pay ₦250,000 yearly for a very small 10-by-8 room with no proper kitchen space. The rent has now risen to ₦550,000. How are struggling tenants expected to survive this kind of increase? To me, this reflects the damage corruption causes: public resources are allegedly converted into private wealth, while the same people denied those resources face even more hardship. What can tenants in this situation realistically do?
