Bandits Abduct Five, Including Two Pregnant Women, in Sokoto Village Raid
On Saturday, March 28, five people were taken hostage when heavily armed bandits stormed Maiwa Village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The attackers arrived on seven motorcycles and surprised residents as they sat in the mosque. A villager told a national newspaper that the gunmen fired shots into the air. He dashed toward the nearby police post, but the officers fled, leaving him exposed. After he escaped, the bandits went house to house and seized the victims. The abducted are identified as Sadiya Umar, Firdausi Umar, Maryam Musa, Ubaida Musa and Harira Nura. Two of them, Sadiya and Ubaida, are heavily pregnant and due to deliver soon. The raiders also rustled 12 cows but later released them. Many villagers fled across the border into Niger Republic and only returned the next morning. The Sokoto State Police Command has yet to issue a statement.
