NSCDC Mining Marshals Arrest 300 Illegal Miners, Prosecute Over 150 Nationwide
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps says its Mining Marshals have arrested more than 300 suspected illegal miners nationwide, prosecuted over 150 people and secured several convictions. NSCDC spokesperson ACC Babawale Afolabi said the suspects include Nigerians and foreign nationals accused of exploiting mineral resources and threatening economic security. He said illegal mining can also finance organised crime and other illicit activities. The Corps said two operatives were dismissed and recommended for prosecution over the alleged unlawful supply of firearms to illegal miners. It added that an investigation cleared the Mining Marshals commander and management officials of allegations involving an operative’s death in Nasarawa and an alleged ₦2 billion diversion. The NSCDC urged Nigerians to provide credible information on illegal mining sites as it continues enforcement and intelligence operations across the country.
