South-East Traditional Rulers Raise Concerns Over January 2027 Election Date
The South East Council of Traditional Rulers has raised concerns over the January 16, 2027 date scheduled for the presidential and National Assembly elections. The council said the timing could be difficult for Igbo voters returning from end-of-year travels. In a communiqué issued after its quarterly meeting, the traditional rulers urged residents who register in cities outside the region to return early enough to vote. They also asked community leaders to suspend local cultural festivals from January 10 until the election period ends. The council renewed its call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu and announced the rotation of its leadership to Eze Linus Nto Mbah of Abia State. It also backed a rotational leadership arrangement for the Southern Traditional Rulers Council across the three southern zones.
