Nigeria Has Spent Trillions on Security: Where Are the Results?

Nigeria has allocated enormous sums to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes. The 2026 budget alone sets aside ₦5.41 trillion for defence and security, while estimates put total security allocations since 2012 at about ₦33 trillion. Despite this spending, many communities still face attacks, abductions and displacement. This has raised fresh questions about whether security funds are properly managed and whether Nigerians are getting measurable results for the money spent. Operational details may need to remain confidential, but procurement, contract awards, project delivery and spending outcomes should face stronger oversight. Lawmakers, civil society groups and citizens continue to demand a thorough audit of defence spending and state security votes. The key issue may no longer be funding alone. Better accountability, intelligence coordination, procurement controls and performance-based spending may be necessary before higher budgets translate into safer lives.
