Nigerians Reject Possible Tariff Hike Over Persistent Poor Power Supply

Nigerians have criticised reports of a possible nationwide electricity tariff increase, saying the Federal Government should first improve power supply and hold electricity companies accountable. Although the Presidency has denied plans for an immediate hike, concerns remain after officials suggested that tariff adjustments across customer bands could be introduced in phases. Consumer advocates say electricity generation remains between about 3,500 and 4,500 megawatts for a population of more than 200 million. They argue that supply is still unreliable, including for Band A customers who were expected to receive at least 20 hours of daily electricity after the 2024 tariff increase. They also called for an audit of investments, subsidies and donor funding in the power sector. According to them, consumers should be represented in electricity reform discussions before any further tariff increase is considered.
