‘Come Down From Your Armoured Vehicle!’ Plateau Protesters Confront Governor Over Palm Sunday Massacre

On Monday, grieving residents of Anguwan Rukuba in Plateau State confronted Governor Caleb Mutfwang during his visit to the community. They accused him of lying and failing to secure their lives and property after the deadly Palm Sunday attack. Protesters demanded that the governor leave his armoured vehicle and address them face to face. They repeatedly chanted “It is a lie” in Hausa, rejecting his promises and urging him to speak directly with the crowd. From the vehicle’s opening, Mr Mutfwang pleaded for patience and calm. He asked protesters to allow the victims’ corpses to be taken to the mortuary and promised to meet them wherever they wanted. The demonstration took place despite a 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area. According to Reuters, armed gunmen raided the community on Sunday night, killing at least 40 people. Official casualty figures are still pending.
