Peter Obi’s Anambra Handover: Why the Debt Debate Has Outlived Two Successors
Peter Obi’s financial handover in Anambra has remained a subject of dispute for more than a decade. Before he left office in 2014, he said his administration left major savings, investments and government balances. His handover figures also listed estimated liabilities, while Debt Management Office records showed domestic and external debt during his tenure. The disagreement began under Willie Obiano, whose administration argued that inherited project commitments and other obligations were not fully reflected in Obi’s presentation. Obi responded that the value of an awarded contract should not automatically be treated as a payable debt, especially where work had not been completed, certified and billed. The Soludo administration has now raised related questions about external loans and inherited obligations. To me, the key issue is not simply whether Anambra had assets, but whether all recognised debts, loan balances and contractual commitments were clearly disclosed. The debate deserves verifiable records rather than political exchanges.
