Tinubu Orders Release of 300 Power Equipment Containers Stranded at Ports for Up to 20 Years
President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate clearance of more than 300 containers of electricity equipment that have been stranded at Nigerian ports for between 14 and 20 years. The Minister of Power, Olasunkanmi Tegbe, said the Ministry of Power will work with the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Nigeria Customs Service to resolve outstanding charges and customs issues delaying their release. The equipment will be assessed after clearance to determine what can still be used. Serviceable materials will be deployed to ongoing power infrastructure projects, while obsolete items will be handled appropriately. Tegbe said the Federal Executive Council also approved procurement steps for proposed East and West Super Grids, expected to expand transmission capacity from about 5,000MW to 19,000MW within two years. The council also approved projects aimed at easing transmission constraints in Abuja, Lagos and the Lagos-Shagamu industrial corridor.
