Why Africa Must Build AI Around Its Own Realities
AI can only deliver real value in Africa when it is designed for local realities. The continent’s diverse languages, informal economies, uneven internet access, high remittance costs and fragmented payment systems cannot be treated as afterthoughts. Nigeria’s adoption of stablecoins during periods of currency volatility shows how global technology can be adapted to solve practical local problems. The same approach could help AI improve liquidity forecasting, foreign-exchange decisions, cross-border payments and financial services. AI systems must also work beyond smartphones and 5G networks. Support for USSD, local payment rails and African languages will be essential to prevent further exclusion. Strong consumer protections, digital identity systems and cross-border regulatory cooperation will also be needed as AI-driven commerce expands. Africa is increasingly moving from adapting technology to creating it. Building AI for African conditions could deepen financial inclusion and produce solutions that other emerging markets can adopt.
