Peter Obi Challenges Anambra’s Claim on $123.77m Debt
I have clarified that Anambra State did not take conventional loans or issue bonds during my tenure as governor. The development facilities cited were concessional World Bank and IFAD programmes arranged through the Federal Government, with repayment spread over decades. The state government should distinguish between the total amount approved for multiyear programmes, the amount actually drawn during my tenure, and the outstanding balance when I left office in March 2014. Combining these figures and calling the total “debt left by Peter Obi” is inaccurate, I maintain. I noted that published debt records placed Anambra’s external debt at about $30 million when I left office, rising to about $45.15 million by December 2014. I asked the government to explain how it arrived at a claim that $123.77 million was inherited from my administration. I also restated that I left more than $150 million in state savings and investments, which I said could have generated annual income and supported debt repayment. My focus remains on the economic hardship facing Nigerians and the need for free, fair political participation.
