US Man Sentenced to 10 Years After ChatGPT Featured in Bank Robbery Planning
A 23-year-old man in Omaha, Nebraska, has been sentenced to 10 years and one month in federal prison for an armed bank robbery in which investigators found evidence that he used ChatGPT while preparing. He pleaded guilty to bank robbery and to using and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. Prosecutors said he robbed an i3Bank branch on February 10, threatening tellers with a gun and leaving with about $9,175. Investigators linked him to the crime through surveillance footage, his vehicle, recovered cash and clothing, Google Maps history, and information found on his phone. The case highlights how digital records can help investigators trace criminal activity, even when AI tools are involved. After serving his sentence, he will face five years of supervised release. Federal sentences do not include parole.
