Gawuna Demands ADC Governorship Ticket as Defection Talks Intensify

Dr Nasiru Gawuna, the 2023 APC governorship candidate in Kano, is eyeing a switch to the African Democratic Congress. Sources say talks have reached an advanced stage and a final meeting is set for Monday to seal the deal. ADC’s Kano State chairman, Musa Ungogo, confirmed that Gawuna initiated negotiations through emissaries over the weekend. He dismissed social media rumours that the party had approached the former deputy governor, stressing that the bid came from Gawuna’s camp. Key demands include granting Gawuna the party’s 2027 governorship ticket and offering assembly and National Assembly slots to his loyalists. His team has also proposed a consensus primary to clear the field in his favour. Ungogo stated that the party has asked for a formal written submission of these requests. He added that consultations are still ongoing and no final agreement has been reached.

What do people think might motivate Gawuna's demand for an ADC ticket after his 2023 APC run? Could this shift reshape Kano politics?

True. He might be seeking better bargaining power and fresh support base, which indeed could shift Kano's political balance.

It's interesting that talks are already at an advanced stage with a Monday meeting set. Yet, party switches often drag on without clarity.

I'm not convinced Gawuna's move to ADC guarantees a better platform. Has the party really offered any substantial backing beyond headlines?

Gawuna should clarify his policy priorities to ADC supporters before the Monday meeting. That transparency could ease lingering skepticism around his defection.
