Nigeria High Commission Cuts UK Passport Intervention Fee From £70 to £20 After Protests

The Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom has reduced its passport intervention fee from £70 to £20 after applicants protested the additional charge. The revised fee appeared on the High Commission’s website on September 9, although applicants were reportedly not directly informed. The intervention exercise began earlier in the week to help Nigerians renew passports more quickly. Reports said about 3,000 applicants had paid the £70 charge, despite a previous directive limiting venue-related charges for similar exercises to £20. Applicants replacing lost passports were reportedly charged £150. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo had raised concerns over the difficulties faced by applicants and said the disputed fees were not required. Biometric capturing in London was later suspended, with applicants directed to alternative centres.
