Anambra Assembly Demands Swift Prosecution of Couple Over Abuse of 10-Year-Old House Boy
The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the immediate prosecution of Mrs Chisom Chukwuyere and the arrest of her husband for failing to protect their 10-year-old house boy, Chiziterem, who suffered severe physical abuse at Odume Layout in Obosi. Lawmakers cited the Child Rights Law of 2006, which criminalises child abuse and prescribes penalties for offences such as torture, trafficking and exploitation. They urged the governor to direct the Ministry of Women and Social Development to work with relevant agencies for thorough assessments and prompt action. The motion, moved by the Onitsha North 1 member and backed by 27 legislators, calls for open trials and recommends amending the Child Rights Law to address current realities. Senior officials have visited the victim, who is receiving treatment after burns and inhumane mistreatment. Three suspects, including the guardian, are now in police custody awaiting prosecution.
