Anambra Says FAAC Deductions Are Still Servicing Loans Taken During Obi’s Tenure

The Anambra State Government says part of its monthly FAAC allocation is still being deducted to repay eight external loans it says were obtained during Peter Obi’s administration. Information Commissioner Law Mefor said the facilities, which were guaranteed by the Federal Government, were loans rather than grants. He said Anambra’s outstanding obligations should be considered when assessing Obi’s financial record as governor. According to the state government, the loans were taken for development programmes and had an outstanding balance of about ₦127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026. Obi has maintained that he left no outstanding debts or unpaid obligations when he handed over in 2014, and challenged the government to provide evidence to the contrary.
