Otti Must Clarify His 2027 Position as Tinubu Campaign List Raises Questions
Alex Otti’s 2023 victory in Abia was shaped by his own political strength and by the wider Labour Party momentum generated by Peter Obi’s presidential campaign. That movement gave many voters hope that Nigeria’s political establishment could be challenged. The debate now is whether Otti remains committed to an opposition presidential project in 2027. His position that he must cooperate with President Bola Tinubu’s administration is understandable, since governors must work with the Federal Government on security, infrastructure and funding. But cooperation is different from appearing unable to oppose the President’s re-election bid. Questions grew after an aide in the Abia government was listed as a member of Tinubu’s campaign council. The aide said he was not consulted and had received no instruction from the governor. Otti should clearly state whether any of his appointees are authorised to serve on the council and identify the presidential candidate he intends to support. Abians are entitled to that clarity. Otti may support Obi, Tinubu or another candidate, but voters should not be left to interpret mixed signals on an issue that could shape Abia’s political future and Nigeria’s opposition politics.
