Igbo Leaders Seek Referendum, United Igbo Region and Suspension of 2027 Elections

The Igbo Leaders of Thought has called for a referendum on Nigeria’s future and the creation of a united Igbo region. The group also wants the 2027 general elections temporarily suspended until restructuring is completed. Its proposed region would include the five South-East states, Anioma, Rivers State and Igbo-speaking communities in parts of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Edo and Kogi states. The group proposed replacing the current structure with 10 regions, regional policing and regional control of natural resources. The leaders also demanded the release and rehabilitation of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu and others in detention. They argued that this would help build trust ahead of talks on Nigeria’s political future. I see these demands as a sign that calls for an alternative political arrangement are gathering momentum as the 2027 elections approach.
