LASERC Restricts Power Companies to 12-Month Billing Window

The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission says supply companies cannot recover electricity charges older than 12 months except in cases of meter tampering, illegal use or obstruction of meter reading. This restriction is set out in Paragraph 35 of the Retail Electricity Supply Code. The regulation was highlighted in a consumer awareness message to protect customers from unexpected back-billing. LASERC also confirmed there is no electricity subsidy in the state and that operators must charge the real cost of power as directed by state leadership. The commission plans to end tariff band classifications and open new zonal offices across Lagos to improve metering and speed up complaint resolution.

How will limiting back billing to twelve months affect your electricity budget, especially if you had billing issues in the past year?

It's interesting that LASERC excludes meter tampering and illegal use from this rule, suggesting regulators still hold suppliers accountable for technical faults.

I'm not convinced twelve months is fair; some bills spike due to seasonal demand and technical delays beyond a year.

To avoid surprises, regularly track your meter readings and report discrepancies immediately, so any late charges stay within that twelve-month window.
