Two Siblings Drown as Decrepit Canoe Capsizes in Ahoada Crossing
A wooden canoe carrying seven people capsized on June 27 at Aliya in Ahoada East, Rivers State. Two siblings, 25-year-old Mekalachi Gogochuri and 23-year-old Rejoice Gogochuri, drowned while returning home from work. Their elder brother, Abraham Gogochuri, said the vessel was in poor condition, leaking badly and patched with wrappers. There were no life jackets on board, and the canoe overturned around 7:45 p.m. Abraham blamed the construction company working on the old monkey bridge for providing unsafe transport instead of restoring the collapsed crossing. Police officers from Ahoada Division have begun investigating the incident. Residents now rely on fragile canoes after the bridge collapse. The family is calling on authorities to rebuild the bridge, enforce safety standards, and deliver justice for the victims.
