Road Safety Day: CORSAN V/P Urges Motorists To Uphold Safety Tenets

The Vice President, Coalition of Road Safety NGOs in Nigeria (CORSAN) Mayor Dr. John Yusuf Suberu has urged motorists to embrace speed limits as stipulated by law to promote continuous reduction in road traffic accidents in Nigeria. Dr. John Suberu who doubles as the Focal person for United Nations Decade of Action for the North Central Nigeria 2021-2030 made the call while in a Media Chat in Commemoration of World Remembrance Day of Road Traffic Crash Victims in Radio House, Abuja Yusuf said that the “World Day Remembrance of RTC Victims”, which is a weeklong event, is usually commemorated annually on the third week of every November. “It is to remind all road users to continuously support the 30-km/hr (20mph) speed limits recently recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) for vehicles at cities, towns and villages as a way of reducing speed related crashes in buildup areas. “The compliance to the above recommendations by all categories of vehicles could not be overemphasized,” he said. Suberu said that day is a globally recognized programme adopted since 2009 pursuant to General Assembly resolution 60/5 aimed at remembering those who either lost their lives or sustained various degrees of injuries on the roads. “The theme of 2021 World Day of Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims is dedicated to erasing the menace of traffic crashes which calls for Remember, Act and Support. “In particular those of pedestrians and all other vulnerable road users like Children, Elderly, Disabled and all other exposed road users like cyclists, motorcyclists and tricycle `keke’ riders.
