Navy Says Nigeria’s Oil Thieves Operate Sophisticated Criminal Networks
The Nigerian Navy says crude oil theft and illegal refining are driven by highly coordinated syndicates, not petty criminals. Naval spokesperson Captain Abiodun Folorunsho said stealing crude in metric tonnes requires ships, funding and extensive logistics. The Navy recently uncovered three suspected illegal refining sites and six reservoirs in Rivers and Delta states. Personnel also recovered about 99,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil and illegally refined diesel. Folorunsho said improved maritime surveillance has strengthened operations against oil thieves. He warned that the Navy would sustain its crackdown and prosecute suspects caught in maritime crimes.
