Rising Bandit Attacks Raise Fears About Security South of the Niger

I have followed reports of banditry and extremist attacks spreading beyond their usual hotspots in the North-West and North-East. Incidents in Ondo, Oyo, Kwara and Niger States have raised concerns that more parts of the country could become vulnerable. I remember unverified reports from 2016 claiming that armed groups planned to move towards the South-East and the Atlantic coast. I initially dismissed those claims, but recent interviews and attacks elsewhere have made me concerned about Nigeria’s wider security situation. Claims that any ethnic or religious group is coordinating a conquest should be treated carefully and verified with credible evidence. My main concern is that security agencies and communities should prevent further expansion of criminal violence. Nigeria must avoid ethnic suspicion, improve intelligence gathering and protect residents in every region before attacks spread further.
