Nnamdi Kanu Insists on Biafra Referendum as Only Basis for Talks
Detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu has rejected political negotiations that do not include a referendum on Biafran independence. He said he would only discuss the right of people in the region to decide their political future through a free vote. In an address to a diaspora gathering, Kanu said he would not support discussions focused on appointments, restructuring or political conferences. He maintained that his goal was a peaceful and self-governing Biafran homeland, not revenge or disorder. Kanu also renewed his criticism of the circumstances of his transfer from Kenya to Nigeria and the legal process that led to his conviction. He urged diaspora groups to continue advocating for his release and that of others he described as unjustly detained.
