Nigeria Calls for Stronger Action Against Xenophobia Across Africa
Nigeria has called on African governments to take stronger action against xenophobia, warning that violence and discrimination against migrants undermine continental unity and peaceful coexistence. Speaking at the UN General Assembly during the adoption of a new declaration against racism, Nigeria said economic hardship and unemployment could not justify attacks, intimidation or persecution of foreign nationals. The country urged governments to protect everyone within their borders, hold perpetrators accountable and strengthen laws, regional cooperation and public education against xenophobia. The declaration was adopted with 95 votes in favour, five against and 37 abstentions.
